Just like most other abilities, emotional awareness must be learned and practised to develop it over time. It’s no wonder that we do things we regret when we don’t know what we’re feeling. However, we aren’t always aware of them and can’t process them healthily. This is a skill you learn rather than something you are born withĬhildren and adults alike, we all experience emotions. ![]() When you become aware of these emotions, it’s easier to find appropriate ways to work with them. The feelings wheel can be used as an exercise to broaden your emotional vocabulary by helping you identify the moods that you are experiencing. The first step towards developing your emotional awareness is identifying your feelings. Indeed, many people are unaware of how they are feeling from moment to moment because they’ve never been taught the language connected with different feelings and emotions. Most are illiterate and live with no care no hope no life. But I know it is too complicated for my clients, these are third generation addicts. I think this chart is another life changer. I know from myself I would be dead if it wasnt for Claudia black and her books about “adult children of alchoholics” i literally owe my life to that person who took the time to write that book. For example: Don’t necessarily “hunt” for the right word. How do you feel? If a core emotion is not clear, you can move from the outside in, identifying the associated feeling first and then making your way toward the core emotion. Get to the core feeling first: Start with the inner-most wheel and move outward, moving from the core feelings toward any associated feelings that might be coming up for you. The circle provides some more emotional words you can say in place of intellectual ones.įeeling the thing: When a feeling starts to arise, look at the wheel. To avoid this, try using simpler, more self-expressive words (emotional language) to explain what you feel. Using intellectual language - words that are not connected to your direct experience - can distance you from your emotions and make it more difficult to know what you are truly feeling.
